[LincolnTalk] Missing Firewood

Ken Hurd-2
   Missing Firewood

by Ken Hurd
    21 Lexington Road

To cut and stack logs near the road

Paid I for the work what was owed.

But a thief in the night

Caused the logs to take flight.

Now I’m truly out what I’m owed!

On Monday the stack was chest high.

By Wednesday, just several logs shy.

On Thursday, quite a dent

By Friday, the pile spent.

“Now what should one do?” says I.

I’m sad if I correctly read

That someone is clearly in need.

Rather than donning a mask,

My request is to ask

In the future is all that I plead.

Re: [LincolnTalk] Missing Firewood

samattes
I would suggest it is poetic expression of the theft of Ken's of firewood.

Bijoy Misra
Sara,
If it is a theft, it is a serious business.
It would need planning and execution
With certain Mayor's likeness!

How about planting a motion-activated video cam?

Re: [LincolnTalk] Missing Firewood

samattes
OK can we take a deep breath
Tradition has DPW leaving downed trees on the side of the road
Residents are free to cut and remove
Sometimes DPW does some of the cutting
So, it is not unreasonable for someone driving by to think wood by the side of the road is free for the taking.
If you have cut, or had wood cut for you that is on the roadside, perhaps a simple sign stating ownership would go a long way in making things clear.
Before we call the police, let’s apply some common sense and generosity of spirit!

Re: [LincolnTalk] Missing Firewood

Bijoy Misra
Sara,
If the firewood is cut to size, it should not be assumed "ready to be picked up".
Possibly the Police knows the person who keeps a tab on such road-side piles.
I would think that stealing a cut pile from a property should be considered unusual.

Ken: You say in your poem that whoever took the firewood (let's use your
terminology and call him The Thief) grabbed a few logs one day, then a few
more the next, and on a third occasion came back for the rest.

It seems clear to me that your intentions were being tested. You saw the
pile dwindling, three days in a row, and did nothing. This response was
taken as confirmation that what you meant by stacking the pile close to the
road was, "Hey! Free firewood!"

Am I missing something here? -- Brad

Re: [LincolnTalk] Missing Firewood

In reply to this post by Dan Paul
Dan;

Your use of "victim" implies a crime, and that is context-dependent. How close to the road was this wood pile? The answer (which of course I don't know, yet) will provide useful information about what Ken appeared to mean by leaving it there.

To pick clear examples, if you leave something outside your building on the street in New York, everyone assumes you want someone to relieve you of it, and that doing so is a favor to you. On the other hand, a woodpile located close to your house in Lincoln is clearly intended for you, and taking any of it is hostile and invasive. We're somewhere in between with this, but I don't know where, so I'm asking. -- Brad

It seems clear to me that your intentions were being tested. You saw the
pile dwindling, three days in a row, and did nothing. This response was
taken as confirmation that what you meant by stacking the pile close to the
road was, "Hey! Free firewood!"
